Music has been written to reinforce political power as well as to cirticise it. Some of the most lavish ceremonial music of all time was written for the Doges of Venice, and Robert King's accomplished forces here re-create the extraordinary ceremony on Ascension Day when the symbolic wedding of Venice to the Adriatic Sea was celebrated. The procession across the lagoon and the service on the lido are both included, making use of the vast spaces of the Albert Hall.
