Details

Written in 1732 for a group of student musicians who met each Friday evening at Zimmermann's Coffee-House in Leipzig to give concerts the Coffee Cantata is the nearest Bach gets to a comic opera. Coffee was the new fad of the century and while many people including Bach became instant fans, it gave other grounds for darkest suspicion. This Cantata pokes fun at both coffee drinkers and their old-fashioned critics.
