Nikolina has fled terror and a crumbled nation, but her scars travel with her. A new country, she learns, is not a new world. Dale is in love with Ruth. Ruth is in love with Francis. Francis is besotted with the new girl serving coffee, who won't speak a word to anyone. The arrogance of youthful Britain comes face-to-face with the legacy of survival as Nikolina is pursued into a past she cannot forget and the desire for love collides with the desire for revenge.
