Edinburgh Festival Fringe. C Electric.
This is a concise and coherent adaptation of the full Strindberg play. From the opening with Christine cracking a can of lager, we know this will not be a reverential production. It works on the whole, if you can accept Miss Julie’s extreme reaction of shame at breaking the class barrier. The performances are good, notably Shaban Arifi’s self-obsessed manic stare as the servant and Aubrey Woodruff as the long suffering Christine. Trine Thielen hits a pleasing balance of petulance and power as Miss Julie. Strindberg lite, but a pleasing hour.
